Yes, you can Downgrade from 3.18 to 3.17 if you can still find the download for 3.17
You only need to overwrite 3.18 with 3.17 and then run the upgrade script for 3.17

Which apps bog down your server? Either from SocialEngine or 3rd party.
SocialEngine's Chat plugin with IM enabled does for me.

My memory increase when i have about 15 people in the chat. It's normal because the chat is always actualising at every new post.
